What is a Crown?

A crown covers up the entire tooth, right down to the gum line and is used to protect teeth that have lost a substantial amount of their natural structure and which cannot be repaired with a tooth filling. Once a tooth is restored with a crown, it will be strong enough for biting and chewing and should look completely natural.

Crowning a Child’s Permanent Teeth

Children may require a crown if a tooth becomes damaged due to decay of tooth or oral trauma and it is not unusual for a child to suffer a knock to the mouth which can damage their permanent teeth. Crowns can be made from several different materials as they may have a metal substructure which is covered up with tooth colored porcelain, while more modern crowns are entirely metal-free. These crowns provide the very best aesthetics and can be excellent for restoring front teeth which are highly visible in the mouth. We will discuss all the available options with you so you can make the best choice for your child.

The Procedure for a Dental Crown

The procedure for a dental crown is very straightforward but will require at least two visits to our dental office.

• We will prepare the tooth by shaping it to remove any diseased areas and to ensure there is sufficient room for the crown.
• Once we are happy with the preparation we will take a detailed dental impression of your child’s mouth. This is sent to the dental laboratory so they can fabricate the crown.
• Each crown is precision-made so it exactly fits over the prepared tooth, sealing out bacteria, saliva and food so the tooth is fully protected and cannot become infected. It normally takes approximately two weeks to make a crown, depending on the materials used. In the meantime the prepared tooth will be protected with a temporary crown.
• The finished crown will be tried in at your child’s next visit and adjusted as necessary.
• Once our NJ kids dentist is happy with the fit and appearance, it will be permanently cemented in place.

The new crown can be used to eat normally and it should look and feel very natural. Your child should brush and floss as if it was their own tooth, and we will check its condition at regular intervals. Dental crowns should last for many years before they need replacing and porcelain will not stain or discolor. Proper dental care, including regular dental cleaning, will help prolong the life of a crown.
